Ancient Greek Myth and Drama in Greek Cinema (1930-2012): An Overall Approach

Abstract: 

The purpose of the present article is to outline the relationship between Greek cinema and themes from Ancient Greek mythology and drama, from 1930 to 2012. For the first time, this study examines more than 260 Greek movies various length. These films’ subject is based on Ancient Greek tragedy and comedy, ancient archetypes, mythical heroes, and archeological landscapes. The study classifies these films and comments on them. The films are classified according to their narrative and placed into sub-categories as per their theatrical, political, psychoanalytical and ethnological material. Films of major Greek directors (Cacoyannis, Koundouros, Tzavellas, Angelopoulos) are examined among than without excluding works of lesser known filmmakers.
