Abstract:
Sophocles’ Philoctetes is an essential but virtually unnoticed intertext of Menander’s Dyskolos. The Philoctetes connection, energised in Dyskolos’ Acts IV and V, furnishes a negative frame for perceiving Knemon’s decision to reject, despite his desperate condition, his family’s offer of care in exchange for his return to society.
