Abstract:
In this paper it is suggested that these verses, which were transmitted by Stobaeus and were earlier attributed to tragedy — something which, despite the tragic reminiscences, must be ruled out for metrical reasons —, cannot really be attributed to comedy either. It is possible that what we have is not a fragment at all, but a self-contained later compilation, with didactic aims, on the topic of φθόνος vs τύχη, the treatment of which leads to an encomium of the Aristotelian virtue of the μεσότης.
